Mont Blanc Triathlon, a new event added this year

Posted on Updated on

The UTMB trail running event had long been on the bucket list of hardy long distance runners, but of course that’s been booked up for months, as has most of the town’s accommodation for that week.

Fortunately, outdoor, sport supporting fans have another event in beautiful scenery that they can add to their calendar the week before the town gets super packed.

20160822_133337.gifThe Mont Blanc International triathlon takes place on the banks of the Lac de Passy (which is a great municipal lake) at the foot of Mont Blanc, where you can see the “rooftop of Europe” reflecting in the lake while supporting this unforgettable triathlon. Iron man has nothing on this one.

This year there are 5 events to choose from: individual and relay sprint, individual and relay Olympic triathlon, 2 junior events and NEW half iron Mont Blanc, so there is something for all tastes and all ages.

TDS 2013 going up to Petite St BernardIt’s still possible to register for entry I to many of the events now.  Registration is open until the 22nd Aug so you’ve still got a bit of time to put some training in.

Fortunately Residences Barrats A is available that week: 19th to 26th August 2017. Contact us for rates +44 7976 555 108.

TDS 2013 going up to Petite St Bernard

Having visited the town during its peak week for many years, we’ve decide to give someone else  the opportunity to experience the buzz that is the UTMB.

There are lots of great family activities going on during the week, and some fantastic opportunities for seeing what endurance athletes can achieve.

The apartment that sleeps 6 is available from the Weds to the Sunday evening. More details and booking links can be found here.

Availability this year only, as he’s applying to enter again in 2017…

An old picture (as of course we have a new sofa), but it give you an idea.

Will it be a pool party to rival Ibiza’s? Black Weekend finale

Posted on

I’ve been reading about the various Alpine Music Festivals being held across the Alps this winter, Snowboming, Snowboxx, Top of the Mountain  etc. and things seem to get bigger and bigger each year with quite a dedicated crowd of followers it seems. One of the Austrian festivals even focuses solely on comedy (Altitude Comedy Festival) which is great for the Jekyll and Hyde’s Monday night comedy night as it often gets to book the big stars after the event in late March.

So I’m wondering if Chamonix’s Black Weekend will eventually grow to be large enough to be placed on the significant winter festival map? The Black Weekend (3rd to 6th April) relies on the identity of the local brand of free skiing Black Crows, which symbolises the convergence of two worlds: free skiing and urban cultures.  It comprises gear testing, off piste outings, a giant tartiflette, lots of dancing to funky tunes and even an old skool ‘hot dog’ race where two skiers go head to head on a moguls course (usually in fancy dress). During the evenings there are also many ticket only events and I was amused to see that there is even a pool party on the last evening in Hotel Les Aiglons.  Eat your heart out Ibiza!!!

bar grand montets

I’m not sure of the current event capacity, but I gather both nightclub and lift bookings are advisable so maybe their aim is to keep it select?  CMB are offering special deals on lift passes for this, the Easter weekend, though if you buy a Mont Blanc Unlimited pass by Sunday 15th March giving a 20% discount. There after, a 10% discount if you buy online between 16th March to 29th March.  The passes also entitle you to free entry in a number of evening events and a happy-hour.  Perhaps as a sense of irony they are calling their offer Jour Blanc….

Even if you don’t want to partipcate in the events, it sounds like a deal.

So here is what to expect in the day….

Daytime itinerary:

FRIDAY APRIL 3RD
6.30PM – 11.00PM : Inauguration – Plan Praz 2000m / Bergerie (Brévent)

I think I’m gutted, I’m not sure, but having decided to swap our place this year and go to Switzerland our usual first week of Easter hols is offering a fab deal for ladies!  We’d have been able to ski the whole valley for 10 Euros for each lady in our party.  10 Euros as opposed to 40 Euros for the Le Pass.  10Euros!!!!

It also looks as though there are lots of other discounts and events on in town as well, including fancy dress party at Les Verts Hotel on Saturday.  What a year to choose to go somewhere else!

Oh well our guests will at least be having a corker of a week.   And given that Chamonix Girl Zone seems to be in its second year, there is a good chance we’ll be abel to enjoy it next year.  Right fight you for it!

Kids ski free in Chamonix

Posted on Updated on

Well they do if they are the second, third or fourth child!

This applies to both the Mont-Blanc Unlimited Pass and Le Pass (we’ll talk more about the differences between the two a little later). It’s definition of  ‘family’ is a nice broad one as well, with grandparents, children over 15 and actual parents being considered suitable ‘family leaders’. So with documentation to prove that you are family (e.g. passport, family record book – I’m going to have to look into examples of what this might be in the UK …) you are eligible.

With 2 full paying ‘parents’, the first child is 50% of the adults rate and 2nd child is free, as are any others in the family.  Not bad hey 🙂

Example for a family of 2 adults and 3 children skiing with a Mont-Blanc Unlimited  6-day pass:

  • the two parents pay the public rate of 240€ (x2)
  • the first child pays 50% or 120,00€
  • the other two ski for free!

Total : 600,00€ for 5 persons and 6 days of skiing (Tariffs 2010, not including smart cards)

Should your family have different preferences for locations etc., you can even mix and match the Le Pass/Unlimited pass element, and price will adjust accordingly.

If you’d like to check it out for yourself or book online click here.

Incidentally a quick guide to the two pass types referenced:

  • Mont Blanc Unlimited (MBU): Best for those seeking maximum flexibility & convenience; people who want immediate access to the highest parts of the resort; people who want to be able to ski Courmayeur & Verbier and have full access to Les Houches slopes.
  • Chamonix Le Pass (CLP): Best for those on a budget; beginner & intermediate skiers.  More limited access.

And here are some ideas of skiing with kids

The pen that mounted Mont Blanc

Posted on Updated on

They made it! Whe, hey. And so did a pen they found in the back of Duncan’s ruck sac. Ok, so maybe it doesn’t have the exclusive brand name of Montblanc, but neither does it have a price tag of hundreds. However, unlike its name sake, it’s actually been there (8.40am French time,Tuesday 8th June 2010) so surely it warrants being a mont blanc pen of sorts?

Watch out for the wind noise.

That’s not what Mr ebay thought when it was put up for a charity auction though:-(

It had managed to raise another £26 for the Prostate Charity and ebay pulled it, the miserable gits. Now we’ve got to start all over again!

The boys are up to £517.19 so far and it would be great to reach the £1,000. So lets hope the pen can generate some interest again!
